FAQs
About Our Center
The Honey Tree is more than just a preschool; it's a legacy. We have been a pillar of the community, serving families in this area since 1983. For over 40 years, we have remained dedicated to our core mission and philosophy of being "a home away from home, where every child is cherished." This guiding principle means we are dedicated to caring for the total child, including their physical, intellectual, emotional, and social needs. We emphasize the holistic development of children through play-based learning experiences that are both engaging and meaningful. Our experienced, long-term staff are the heart of our school, and it is their work that fosters individuality, creativity, and a love for learning in a community where every child feels valued, respected, and supported. Our 40-year history and our deep commitment to the whole child are what make The Honey Tree a trusted and stable choice for generations of families.
We serve children from 6 weeks old up to 12 years old. We offer a full-time program for children 6 weeks old until they are old enough for kindergarten, as well as before and after school care for elementary school students.
We are open Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Our program follows the same school schedule as our local school district, Cy-Fair. The Center is closed on the following holidays:
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day & The Friday after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Day
If a holiday falls on a weekend, we will be closed the Friday before or the Monday after or both.
We pride ourselves on maintaining ratios that are better than the state requirement. This allows our teachers to provide more one-on-one attention and build stronger connections with each child. For example, the state maximum for infants is 1:4, and our ratios are even better!
We provide transportation to and from public schools in our area for school-age children. Transportation to specific area schools depends on student enrollment. We currently transport to and from Hancock Elementary and Matzke Elementary.
Health & Safety
Your child's safety and development are our top priorities. Our staff's training includes:
- CPR and First Aid: Our entire staff is certified in CPR and First Aid for infants, children, and adults.
- Early Childhood Education: All staff members are well-trained and possess extensive knowledge in Early Childhood Education.
- Ongoing Professional Development: Every teacher completes a minimum of 24 hours of ongoing child development training each year to stay current on the best practices.
- Food Handler Certification: Since we value health and safety in all areas, our staff also holds Food Handler Certifications.
We strictly follow all state guidelines for safe sleep. We are a "Back-to-Sleep" center, which means all infants are placed on their backs to sleep. Cribs are kept clear of all blankets, pillows, bumpers, and soft toys.
We follow specific procedures from the Texas Minimum Standards to ensure the safety of all children with dietary needs.
- Food Allergy Emergency Plan: At enrollment, we require parents to provide a food allergy emergency plan for any child with a known food allergy diagnosed by a health-care professional. This plan must be signed by both the parent and the health-care professional.
- Detailed Information: This plan includes a list of the child's specific allergies, a list of possible symptoms, and the exact steps for caregivers to take if the child has an allergic reaction.
- Communication: A list of each child's food allergies is posted in our food preparation areas and in each classroom the child uses. All caregivers and employees who prepare and serve food are made aware of these allergies.
- Policy: We strictly follow the plan and do not serve a child any food identified on their food allergy emergency plan. For other therapeutic or special diets, we require written approval from a health-care professional or dietician, which is kept on file.
If a child becomes ill, they will be kept in isolation apart from other children until a parent can pick them up. A child must be excluded from the center if they have:
- An illness that prevents them from comfortably participating in activities.
- An illness that requires more care than we can provide without compromising the health and safety of other children.
- A fever accompanied by behavior changes or other symptoms (e.g., oral temp above 101°F, axillary temp above 100°F).
- Symptoms of severe illness, such as lethargy, uncontrolled diarrhea, or two or more vomiting episodes in 24 hours. Children must be free of fever, diarrhea, and vomiting for 24 hours before they can return to the Center.
The office will document any injury.
- For minor injuries: Parents will be informed about the incident and the first aid provided when they arrive for pick-up.
- For severe injuries: We will contact parents immediately. If emergency treatment is needed, we will contact emergency medical services (911), give first aid or CPR as needed, and then contact the parent.
Yes. We can administer both prescription and non-prescription medication, provided we have a signed medication chart from the parent.
- Prescription Medication: Must be in the original container labeled with the child's name, date, directions, and physician's name.
- Non-Prescription Medication: Must be in the original container labeled with the child's name and the date it was brought to the center. All medication will be stored properly, inaccessible to children. We will record the time, date, and dosage each time it is given.
Daily Life & Curriculum
Yes. The Honey Tree is committed to providing food that is nutritious and served in a variety of amounts adequate to ensure growth and development. We offer the following meal schedule:
- Breakfast: Served from 6:00 a.m. until 7:30 a.m.
- Snack: Provided during morning classes and after “quiet time” in the afternoons.
- Lunch: All children are given a balanced and nutritious lunch until 12:00 p.m. Our lunch count is taken by 10:00 a.m. to ensure no child goes hungry. Daily menus for all meals and snacks will be posted for parents to review.
The Honey Tree Center utilizes Funnydaffer, a curriculum created for teachers by teachers. Funnydaffer provides step-by-step instructions, a comprehensive supply list, clearly defined learning goals, and a list of the educational standards being met in each lesson plan. It aims to bring joy back to teaching with its easy-to-use, fully customizable solution for the classroom.
- Curriculum Goal: The goal of our curriculum is to create an engaging and enriching learning experience that fosters children's growth across all developmental domains, including exploration, creativity, and critical thinking.
- Curriculum Implementation: Teachers utilize the step-by-step lesson plans to facilitate hands-on activities that align with the children’s interests and developmental stages. Through a combination of guided instruction, independent exploration, and group activities, we ensure that our curriculum not only meets educational goals but also nurtures a love for learning in every child.
We use the Brightwheel online application for parent communication. This app allows us to send you written reports and updates on your child's daily experiences, progress, activities, and developmental milestones. For infants, we provide a Daily Infant Schedule (sent home at the end of each day) that details sleep times, food consumption, diaper changes, and activities, as required by state standards.
Yes. We believe in the benefits of physical activity and outdoor play. State standards require, and our activity plan includes, at least two daily opportunities for outdoor play (weather permitting).
- Toddlers (18-35 months): Get at least 60 minutes of total outdoor play daily.
- Preschoolers (3-5 years): Get at least 3 hours of physical activity per day, with at least 90 minutes of that being moderate to vigorous active play. During extreme weather, we have a plan for indoor physical activity.
We understand the importance of balancing screen time. Per state regulations, we do not use any screen time for children under the age of two. For children two and older, screen time is:
- Limited to no more than one hour per day.
- Used only for educational purposes that align with our curriculum.
- Never used during mealtimes, snack times, or rest times.
- Always free from advertisements or violence. School-aged children may use screens without restriction specifically for homework.
Our approach is to teach children acceptable behavior and self-control through positive methods. Our staff uses praise and encouragement to reinforce good behavior. We remind children of expectations using clear, positive statements and redirect behavior using positive language.
